Why RentCheck Exists
Finding affordable housing is harder than ever. Rent prices are rising faster than wages, and millions of people are spending too much of their income on housing.
RentCheck helps you understand what you can actually afford — in seconds, with zero complexity. No sign-ups, no data collection, just a straight answer.
The Rules We Use
Our calculator uses established financial guidelines to show you three rent levels:
25% — Comfortable
Leaves plenty of room for savings, emergencies, and enjoying life. Financial experts recommend this if you can swing it.
30% — Standard
The classic "30% rule" used by landlords and lenders. Manageable for most people, but doesn't leave much buffer.
40% — Maximum
You'll be "rent-burdened" at this level. Every unexpected expense becomes stressful. Avoid if possible.

- Location costs — Living closer to work might justify higher rent if you save on transport
- Debt obligations — Student loans or car payments reduce what you can afford
- Savings goals — Saving for a house deposit? You'll want to stay under 25%
- Income stability — Freelancers should budget more conservatively
- Benefits included — Utilities, parking, or gym included? Factor that in
